Electrotherapy for pain

TENS · Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

The first transcutaneous stimulation device (TENS) was developed in 1975 to treat chronic pain.

At FD-Fisio we have short-wave, low-frequency TENS units (2–300 Hz). By adjusting the parameters we treat chronic or acute pain; correct use depends on knowledge of the technique.

It is based on the Melzack and Wall theory: over-stimulation of the fast fibres saturates the nerve endings and blocks the perception of pain, producing a clear sensation of relief.

Placement, current, intensity and duration must be controlled by the physiotherapist. It is not recommended for pacemaker wearers.
